Blueprint Energy

Flywheel Energy Systems Inc.

Blueprint Energy is the research and product development division of Flywheel Energy Systems Inc. Our focus is to work with channel partners such as OEM's, tier 1 suppliers and research institutions to design and develop advanced energy storage solutions for transportation markets.

Advanced kinetic energy storage research and development

Founded in 1993 we have developed a flywheel kinetic energy storage platform suitable for transportation applications. Our world leading technology was originally designed for low earth orbit satellite applications. Our transportation solutions, derived from our spacecraft power systems research, provide a low cost, reliable alternative to battery, ultra capacitor and hydraulic energy storage systems.

Focused on high power, short duration applications, our products are ideally suited for charge sustaining hybrid vehicles of all kinds and offer the following benefits:

  • Long life / high cycle tolerance (> 20 years, > 5 million cycles)
  • High round trip efficiency
  • No capacity fade, power fade or efficiency fade
  • Wide temperature tolerance
  • Low maintenance cost
  • No end of life disposal costs
  • Low total cost of ownership / through life cost
  • No high voltage exposure during maintenance operations and first responder intervention

As a platform technology, flywheels have a valuable place in many applications.

Blueprint Energy facility overview

Our facility is based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The services we provide include design and modeling, prototype and small scale manufacturing and low cycle fatigue (LCF) testing.

Air turbine test facility

The air turbine test facility uses a compliant, damped quill shaft for rotor attachment. Non-contacting sensors are used for displacement and temperature measurement of the rotor under test. Axial and radial bumpers above and below the rotor capture loose rotor events.

Maximum speed: 60,000 rpm Blueprint Energy Test Facility
Maximum rotor mass: 90 kg
Maximum rotor diameter: 700 mm
Pressure range: 10-100 mTorr
Temperature range: 20-100°C
Environment: Argon or nitrogen

Electric drive test facility

The electric drive test facility uses a permanent magnet synchronous AC motor directly coupled to the rotor under test. Non-contacting sensors are used for displacement and temperature measurement of the rotor. We can provide order analysis of rotor radial or axial vibrations for frequencies up to 50 kHz. Compliant high precision spindle bearings constrain the rotor at all times during the test so there are no loose rotor events.
